Joseph the Dreamer – A Journey of Faith and Forgiveness
Scripture: Genesis 37:5 – “Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.”
---
Introduction:
The story of Joseph is one of the most powerful narratives in the Bible. It's a story of hope, pain, betrayal, patience, and God's unfailing purpose. Joseph was just a teenager when he received dreams from God. But the path from the dream to its fulfillment was filled with trials that would break most people. Still, Joseph held on—not to his own strength, but to the God who gave him the dream.
This devotion invites you to reflect on how Joseph’s journey applies to your own life, especially when you're walking through times of confusion, betrayal, or delay.
---
1. God Gives the Dream
Joseph’s dreams were a glimpse of the future God had prepared for him. In Genesis 37, we read that Joseph saw sheaves of grain bowing down to his own, and stars and the sun and moon doing the same. These dreams weren’t the result of his imagination or pride—they were prophetic visions from God. But when he shared them, his brothers became jealous and angry. Even his father rebuked him.
God still gives dreams and visions today. Maybe it's not a literal dream at night, but a calling in your heart, a burden to help others, or a longing to accomplish something meaningful for His kingdom. But here's the truth: not everyone will understand your dream. Some may even oppose it.
> Reflection: Has God placed something in your heart that others don’t understand? Don’t give up. The One who gave you the dream will be faithful to fulfill it.

2. Trials Prepare the Dreamer
After sharing his dream, Joseph’s life took a painful turn. His own brothers threw him into a pit, sold him into slavery, and told their father he was dead. In Egypt, he served in Potiphar’s house, only to be falsely accused and imprisoned. From favored son to forgotten prisoner, Joseph endured betrayal, false judgment, and abandonment.
Yet, in Genesis 39:2, we read a powerful phrase: “The Lord was with Joseph.” That truth is repeated several times throughout his trials. Even when it seemed like God was silent, He was guiding every step.
Sometimes, we assume that if we’re following God, life will be easy. But the reality is that faith is often forged in the fire of adversity. The dream may be divine, but the dreamer must be shaped through surrender, obedience, and patience.
Reflection: Are you in a season of hardship right now? Take heart. God is not punishing you—He’s preparing you. Like Joseph, your pit may be part of your promotion.

3. God’s Timing is Perfect
After years of suffering, Joseph’s life changed in a single day. God gave Pharaoh a dream no one could interpret—except Joseph. He was pulled from prison and elevated to second-in-command of all Egypt. The dream he had as a young boy was finally fulfilled.
But here’s the beauty of it: Joseph didn’t use his position for revenge. When he came face to face with his brothers years later, instead of punishing them, he forgave them. He saw God’s hand in every painful moment. In Genesis 50:20, he says to them, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.”
Joseph understood something deep—God had used even the darkest parts of his life for a greater purpose: not just to fulfill his dream, but to save many lives.
Reflection: Can you trust God’s timing, even when it feels delayed? Remember that He sees the full picture, and what He has promised will come to pass—in His perfect time.

4. Forgiveness Releases the Future
Joseph’s ability to forgive is one of the most powerful parts of his story. He had every reason to stay bitter. But he chose mercy over revenge, grace over hatred. His forgiveness brought healing to a broken family and set the stage for future generations to thrive.
Bitterness can kill a dream faster than hardship. If you’re holding onto pain from the past, ask God to help you release it. Forgiveness isn’t easy, but it’s freeing—and it allows you to step fully into what God has prepared for you.
Reflection: Is there someone you need to forgive so you can move forward? Ask God to give you the grace to let go, just like Joseph did.
---
Conclusion:
Joseph’s life reminds us that God's plans are always bigger than our pain. His story teaches us to trust God in every season—when we’re in the pit, the prison, and eventually, the palace. What others mean for harm, God can turn for good.
Hold on to the dream. Keep walking in obedience. Forgive those who hurt you. And trust that God is working, even when you can’t see it.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the story of Joseph. Thank You for reminding me that You are with me in every part of my journey—even in the hardest moments. Help me trust You when I don’t understand, and give me faith to believe that You’re working all things together for my good. Teach me to forgive, to wait patiently, and to hold tightly to Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
