Transformed by His Presence
Acts 4:13 – “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and took note that these men had been with Jesus.”
There are few verses in Scripture as powerful and encouraging as Acts 4:13. The religious leaders of Jerusalem, men who were trained in the Law and steeped in tradition, were astonished at the boldness of Peter and John. They recognized something unusual about them—not their education, not their background, not their wealth—but the simple fact that they had been with Jesus.
This truth is both humbling and inspiring. It reminds us that a life transformed by Jesus is not about qualifications, but about closeness to Him. The presence of Christ changes everything.
Peter: From Fearful to Fearless
When we look at Peter before the resurrection, he was often impulsive, passionate, and at times, unstable. He was the one who stepped out of the boat to walk on water but quickly sank when fear overtook him. He was also the disciple who swore allegiance to Jesus, only to deny Him three times on the night of His arrest. Fear once controlled Peter’s actions.
Yet, after the resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, Peter stood boldly in front of the same people who crucified Jesus and declared, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). What changed? Peter had been with Jesus. The presence of Christ, His forgiveness after Peter’s denial, and the power of His Spirit transformed Peter from a fearful fisherman into a fearless preacher of the gospel.
John: From Son of Thunder to Apostle of Love
John’s story is equally remarkable. He and his brother James were nicknamed “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17) because of their fiery temperament. At one point, they even asked Jesus if they could call down fire from heaven to destroy a Samaritan village that rejected Him (Luke 9:54). Ambitious, zealous, and intense—this was John before the transforming presence of Jesus.
But by the end of his life, John was remembered not for thunder but for love. His letters breathe with affection and tenderness: “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God” (1 John 4:7). He became the disciple who leaned on Jesus at the Last Supper, the one who cared for Mary at the foot of the cross, and the apostle who continually emphasized love as the mark of true discipleship.
What changed John? Simply this: he had been with Jesus. Day after day, walking alongside the Savior, experiencing His patience, His compassion, His humility, and His sacrificial love—John was remade into the “apostle of love.”
Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Impact
The beauty of Acts 4:13 is that Peter and John were called “unschooled, ordinary men.” They were not scholars or leaders. They were not wealthy or influential in society. Yet, God chose them to carry the message of salvation to the world. Why? Because they had been with Jesus.
This should encourage us deeply. Many times, we feel inadequate, unworthy, or incapable of making a difference for Christ. But the transforming presence of Jesus equips ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The world does not need our titles, resumes, or accomplishments—it needs the evidence that we have been with Jesus.
Being with Jesus Today
We may not walk with Jesus physically as Peter and John did, but we can experience His presence daily. Through prayer, we learn His heart. Through Scripture, we hear His voice. Through worship, we draw near to Him. Through obedience, we reflect His character.
When we spend time with Jesus, people will notice. They may not always agree with us, but they will see the peace, love, boldness, and joy that only come from Him. Just as the council in Acts 4 could not deny the courage of Peter and John, the world today cannot ignore the evidence of a life transformed by Christ.
Reflection Questions
1. How has Jesus transformed areas of weakness in your life into testimonies of His grace?
2. Do others see in your words, actions, and character that you have “been with Jesus”?
3. What daily habits can you cultivate to grow in His presence and reflect His likeness?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the power of Your transforming presence. Just as You turned Peter’s fear into courage and John’s thunder into love, I ask that You would change me. Draw me closer to You each day, and let my life be a living testimony that I have been with You. May those around me see Your love, Your truth, and Your grace shining through me. Amen.

Final Thought:
Like Peter and John, we may be ordinary in the world’s eyes, but when we spend time with Jesus, our lives are marked with extraordinary power. The question for each of us today is simple: Will people be able to tell that we have been with Jesus?
