More Than Words: Living a Life of Total Love for God

“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’” – Matthew 22:37

When Jesus was asked by the Pharisees about the greatest commandment in the Law, His answer was clear and profound: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. These words are more than just a command; they reveal the very essence of what it means to live as God’s children. Our relationship with Him is not built primarily on rules, rituals, or even religious acts—it is rooted in love.

Love Begins with the Heart

The heart in Scripture often represents the center of our emotions, desires, and will. To love God with all our heart means that our deepest affections are set upon Him. This is not half-hearted devotion or occasional affection, but a wholehearted love that places God above everything else.

So often, our hearts are drawn to many things—career, relationships, possessions, or even ourselves. None of these are necessarily wrong, but when they become the focus of our love above God, they turn into idols. To love God with all our heart is to say, “Lord, I choose You above all. You are my greatest treasure.” It means aligning our desires with His will and letting our hearts beat in rhythm with His.

David expressed this in Psalm 42:1: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” When our heart longs for God in this way, our lives are transformed. Worship, prayer, and obedience flow naturally out of a heart that loves Him.

Love with All Your Soul

The soul represents the very core of our being—our life itself. To love God with all our soul means giving Him every part of who we are. It is not just emotional or intellectual, but total surrender of our life to His lordship.

This kind of love is sacrificial. It means saying, “Lord, not my will, but Yours be done.” It is the willingness to lay down our own dreams, ambitions, and even comforts for the sake of following Him. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Loving God with all our soul is not a one-time act—it is a daily surrender. Each day, we are faced with choices to either live for ourselves or live for God. Choosing Him again and again demonstrates the depth of our love.

Love with All Your Mind

Our mind is where our thoughts, reasoning, and understanding reside. Loving God with all our mind means we submit even our thoughts and intellect to Him. It means choosing to meditate on His Word, to guard against thoughts that lead us away from Him, and to let His truth shape our worldview.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The more we fill our minds with God’s truth, the more we will love Him rightly. In a world that constantly bombards us with false ideas, philosophies, and distractions, choosing to set our mind on Christ is a way of loving Him.

This also means using our reasoning and understanding to glorify God. When we study Scripture, reflect on His works, and think deeply about His truth, we are engaging our minds in love for Him. Our intellect should never be separated from our devotion; instead, it should fuel our worship.

Why This Commandment Matters

Jesus called this the greatest commandment because it captures the foundation of all others. If we truly love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, obedience will not be a burden. Our love will naturally lead us to keep His commands, serve others, and live righteously.

In fact, when we fail to love God fully, that’s when sin gains a foothold. Sin is essentially misplaced love—loving ourselves, the world, or temporary pleasures more than we love Him. But when our love is rightly ordered, God becomes the center of everything, and life flows with joy and purpose.

Living Out This Love

So how do we live this command daily?

1. Seek Him first in everything. Start your day with prayer and Scripture, setting your heart and mind on God.

2. Surrender your will. Ask God each day to lead your decisions, and be willing to let go of what He asks.

3. Guard your heart and mind. Be intentional about what you allow into your life—what you watch, listen to, and dwell on.

4. Express your love. Love is not only words but action. Worship Him passionately, serve others selflessly, and obey Him faithfully.

A Life of Love

To love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind is a lifelong journey. We will stumble at times, but God’s grace enables us to grow deeper in love with Him each day. The more we know Him, the more we love Him; the more we love Him, the more our lives reflect His glory.

May we echo the words of Deuteronomy 6:5 daily: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” This is not just a command—it is the invitation to the most fulfilling relationship we will ever know.
