God’s Indescribable Gift

"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" – 2 Corinthians 9:15

When Paul wrote these words, he had just finished encouraging the Corinthians to give generously, reminding them that God loves a cheerful giver. Yet, as he came to the end of his teaching on generosity, his heart overflowed in praise—not just for the act of giving, but for the ultimate gift God had given to humanity: Jesus Christ.

Paul calls this gift “indescribable.” No language can fully capture the magnitude of what God has done in sending His Son for us. Our words fail because the depth of His love, the richness of His grace, and the greatness of His mercy surpass human understanding.

Think for a moment:

The gift of salvation—Jesus took our sin, shame, and punishment, offering us forgiveness and eternal life.

The gift of grace—we receive blessings and favor we could never earn on our own.

The gift of love—God demonstrated His love by giving His only Son, not when we were good, but when we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

Every other blessing in our lives—provision, health, family, opportunities—is wrapped up in this ultimate gift. Even when we face trials, the presence of Christ within us reminds us that we are never abandoned.

Paul’s response is not a detailed explanation, but a heartfelt exclamation: “Thanks be to God!” Gratitude becomes our natural response to grace. The more we reflect on God’s gift, the more our hearts overflow with thanksgiving, leading us to worship, obedience, and generosity.

Application:

1. Cultivate Gratitude – Take time each day to thank God not just for material blessings but for the gift of Jesus.

2. Reflect Christ’s Generosity – Because we have freely received, we can freely give. Let God’s indescribable gift inspire you to be generous in love, time, and resources.

3. Live in Awe – Never allow the gift of salvation to become ordinary. Renew your wonder at the cross daily.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your indescribable gift—Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Words cannot capture the greatness of Your love and the richness of Your grace. Teach me to live in gratitude, to reflect Your generosity, and to never lose sight of the wonder of salvation. May my life overflow with thanksgiving to You in every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
