“The God Who Came Near”

One of the most profound and life-changing truths of the Christian faith is the deity of Jesus Christ. Everything we believe—redemption, forgiveness, hope, eternity—rests on this single foundation: Jesus is God. Not merely a prophet, not simply a miracle-worker, not just a moral teacher, but God Himself in human flesh. If Jesus is not God, then His words cannot be fully trusted, His death cannot save, and His resurrection loses its meaning. But because He is God, His promises are certain, His sacrifice is sufficient, and His presence is eternal.

God Came Near

The story of the Incarnation begins with a breathtaking truth: God came near. In the birth of Jesus, the eternal Son stepped into time. The One who spoke galaxies into existence allowed Himself to be wrapped in swaddling cloths. The infinite became an infant. John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The word “dwelt” literally means “tabernacled.” Just as God once lived among His people in the tabernacle, He now lived among humanity in the person of Jesus.

This is not the story of a great man rising to divine status—it is the story of a divine God humbling Himself to human form. Jesus did not become God; He has always been God. John 1:1 declares, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus is eternal, uncreated, and divine. His birth was not His beginning—it was His arrival.

The Virgin Birth Reveals His Divine Nature

The angel’s announcement to Mary in Luke 1:35 reveals an essential truth: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” Jesus was not conceived by human power or human will. His conception was a miraculous work of God. The virgin birth confirms:

1. His Divine Origin

Jesus did not inherit the sinful nature passed down through Adam. His origin was heavenly, not earthly. He is the Son of God, not in a metaphorical sense, but in essence.

2. His Sinlessness

Because His conception was by the Holy Spirit, Jesus was born without sin. Only a sinless Savior could offer a sinless sacrifice.

3. His Unique Identity

No one before or after Jesus has come into the world this way. His birth was a sign that God Himself had entered human history.

Jesus Reveals the Father

Some people ask, “What is God like?” The answer is simple: Look at Jesus. He is the exact revelation of God’s nature. Colossians 1:15 says, “He is the image of the invisible God.” Jesus did not merely teach truths about God—He embodied them.

When Jesus showed compassion to the broken, that was the heart of God.

When He forgave sinners, that was the mercy of God.

When He calmed the storm, that was the authority of God.

When He healed the sick, that was the power of God.

When He raised the dead, that was the life of God.

He could say in John 14:9, “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.”

No prophet, priest, or king ever dared to make such a claim. Only God can reveal God.

Jesus Accepted Worship

Throughout Scripture, worship is reserved for God alone. Angels refuse worship. Apostles refuse worship. But Jesus? He received it. When Thomas touched His wounds and cried, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus did not correct him—He affirmed him.

If Jesus were not God, this would have been idolatry. Instead, Jesus welcomed worship, because He is worthy of it.

Jesus Forgives Sin

In Mark 2, Jesus forgave the paralytic’s sins. The religious leaders were shocked: “Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Exactly. Jesus was showing them who He was. Only God can pardon sin. And Jesus does so with authority, compassion, and finality.

Jesus Has Eternal Existence

Before Abraham lived centuries earlier, Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)

He used the very name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush—I AM WHO I AM. The Jewish leaders understood exactly what He was saying, which is why they tried to stone Him for blasphemy. Jesus wasn’t just claiming to be ancient—He was claiming to be eternal.

Why the Deity of Christ Matters Today

The deity of Jesus Christ is not merely a doctrinal point—it is a foundation for daily life.

1. His Presence Is Real

If Jesus is God, then He is with you always. Your prayers are not whispered into the air—they are heard by the Lord of heaven.

2. His Promises Are Sure

Everything Jesus said is trustworthy because God cannot lie. When He promises peace, forgiveness, comfort, or eternal life, we can rest on His Word.

3. His Sacrifice Is Enough

A human life could not save the world. Only a divine Savior could carry the weight of our sin. The cross has power because the One who died on it was—and is—God.

4. His Lordship Is Absolute

If Jesus is God, then He is not just Savior—He is Lord. We are called to obey, follow, worship, and surrender.

Conclusion: Worship the Divine Savior

The deity of Jesus Christ invites us into awe. It calls us to worship the One who left heaven to walk among us, who died in our place, and who rose in victory. It reminds us that our Savior is not weak, distant, or limited—He is the Almighty God, full of love, power, and truth.

May your heart bow before Him today.

May your soul rest in His divinity.

And may your life reflect the glory of the One who is both fully God and fully human, our Lord Jesus Christ.
